    Not exactly.

When you teach the sit command, the dog will respond to the command. All dogs sit. .

If you have a well trained dog it shouldn’t be sitting when it knows it should be standing. That doesn’t make sense.

    No it is not.
Teach your dog the STAND command as well.
Most dogs that are competition obedience trained also know the Stand command.
My guy`s compete in Show, Obedience, Agility and Field, and all of them know to Stand when commanded to do so.
As well many dogs over the time of training also learn collar recognition and know when it time to Show, versus the obedience sit.
    Good Luck and God Bless

Yes and no. Most show dogs know the sit command, most have passed the AKC good citizen test – ’sit/stay’ is a part of the test. But a much more important command for them to know as a show dog is stand and watch.

They aren’t allowed to sit during judging and are focused on their watch command. It wouldn’t occur to them to sit because watch and heel are very intense.

I was advised to teach my show b*tch the stand command & forgo sit, the reason being, as mentioned, she may become confused & sit when she should stand.

    However, I taught her the sit & stand commands, with different hand signals & she never confused the two. {It helped that when she was stacked in the stand, she was focussed on the bait}

there is no reason to not teach the sit command. But make sure to teach the stand command.

when I took my hound into the conformation ring his commands were, Stand up ( for stacking and examination), Wait ( to keep his attention). . and Lets go ( for the motion part of the exam)

But he also entered the Obedience ring and did quite well there with all of the standard commands.

Just make sure when you use the conformation commands they are never followed by a sit command.

It is not true. I used to have an Irish setter that I showed in both conformation and obedience. Just use the show leash when you are practicing showing and an different leash and collar when you practice obedience. You will also move differently. You will also teach the Stand command. My Irish Setter never sat in the show ring. And she always sat while heeling in the obedience ring.

yeah some show folks will not teach sit least the dog do so in the show ring – others enter the dog in both obedience(where they must sit) & conformation (where the stand is all) without major problems- it helps to adjust YOUR body posture and to use different feeling collars so they know whats up.

I think this myth is propagated because many people raising an obedience prospect tend to emphasize sit till it becomes “confused dog default action” – show folks af course teach the show stack for same default. . . .

PS in my personal opinion a judge that considers a sit instantly makes a dog pet quality doesn’t deserve entry fees. . .

Wow. No. If your dog learns to sit on command that means they sit when you ask.

If your show dog doesn’t know how to sit you can’t show in obedience.

Not really. When we went to training classes, as these were basically Obedience Training classes we show lot used to stand our dog when the others were all given the sit command. But frankly there’s no reason why a show dog shouldn’t also learn to sit! Perhaps in training classes, there is some relevance in not having them sit however. And in a ring craft training situation, it would be better not to have them sit.

2 of my 3 Beagle girls I have owned are ex Show Champions. Both have had to be taught to sit. The breeder who has shown them only teaches them to stand and ringcraft. I was told as they didn’t want them sitting in the ring which could cost them placings in that class.
